Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs, but principally attacks the joints producing an inflammatory synovitis that often progresses to destruction of the articular cartilage and ankylosis of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also produce diffuse inflammation in the lungs, pericardium, pleura, and sclera, and also nodular lesions, most common in subcutaneous tissue under the skin. Although the cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, autoimmunity plays a pivotal role in its chronicity and progression.

It is considered as chronic disease and moreover believed that there is no sure treatment for it. Doctors has no reason why and how this disease attacks, however a few reason could be change in life style, change in food habits, sudden change in weather etc.
I had suffered from this disease at age of 27. I had been to London, UK for 3 months in the beginning of year 2006. I came back in April to India and found myself grabbed by this disease in May.
Initial symptoms: Pain in knees and lower back, weight loss and mild temperature. It was getting severe with time. Pain used to be more in morning; however, I used to get relief once I get to my work. Initially I ignore it for few days. Then I got myself checked and one Doctor declared that it is Gout. Probably every joint pain is taken as Gout. I started medicines. However I start loosing my weight and day by day pain was increasing. Then I started feeling pain in almost all the joints of my body, like fingers, wrist, elbow, shoulders, lower back, legs joints etc. It was followed by fever. I got 99 temperatures in the morning, which used to increase till evening and eventually I was getting 101-102 temperature in the evening. I had to take ‘Nimuslide’ daily to control the ‘pain and fever’ to sleep. ESR was at the level of 50.
Diagnosis: Finally my luck helps me and I landed to ‘Kailash Hospital, Noida, U.P’. There I met with a Rheumatologist. He was quite senior and mature. He asked me for some of the tests and confirmed the Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was shocked but he consoled me saying that it is curable. I don't know whether it was truth or he told me this just to console me. I started medicines from there. He supported me a lot as a mature doctor and always encouraged me to fight the disease saying that it is very normal disease and will be cured soon.
Solution: I was taking medicines as mentioned above. These were working however effect was slow. I have to take the medicine on daily basis, otherwise symptoms used to attack me immediately. Finally I met with one of our family friend, a Ayurvedic Doctor by profession (having a small size Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing unit since last many years and a lot of knowledge in this field from their parents and grand parents). He checked my report and suggested me that it should not be taken lightly and that it can be cured however I had to follow their tough advices very strictly. And they started the treatment.
Treatment: I have continued the Allopathic medicines for few days and bring it slowly to zero, because I knew that Ayurvedic medicine will take time to show the effect. I started the treatment. The toughest advice was to avoid normal diet and take only following in diet:
- Bottle Gourd (Ghiya)
- Ridge Gourd (Tori)
- Round Gourd (Tinda)
- Yellow Pulse (Moong Daal)
- No onion or Tomato with these vegetables
- No Milk product
- Nothing else
- Some fruits like Guava etc
- So a very simple and controlled diet
It was tough, but I followed it religiously for 4 months with their medicines. During this period, I loose almost 10-12 kg weight. I struggled a lot with quite painful evenings and high temperature in night. But I never stopped going to office. And probably, body movement and break from tense environment helped me in faster recovery. And miracle happened in just 3-4 months. I start recovering. I stopped the Allopathic medicine about a month after I started this medicine. However I continue my visits to Doctor for checkup and tests (very sorry to Doctor as I never told him that I am not taking the medicine). But Doctor was happy with recovery and improvement in my condition. I recovered completely, in about 5-6 months. My Ayurvedic doctor has recommended me to continue medicines for another 3-4 months just for precaution and allow me some other vegetables with daily diet. I took the medicines for almost a year.
Now it is 3 years after that event. I have never felt that problem again.
Major points which helped me:
- Complete Diet Control as per Doctor Suggestion
- Regular medication
- Regular Meditation and bit of Yoga (Pranayam)
- I used to do 'Pranayam' daily before this disease for 30 mins. I believe, it made me active and gave me strength to be regular with my daily work while I was suffering from RA. I reduced the Pranayam to 10 mins during this period due to weakness and increased the meditation.
- No break from office or daily routine work
- Faith in Doctor and Medicines
I hope this information will be helpful.
